*~Mini Book Reviews: Catching Up On Book Reviews Part 2~ All 5 Stars~*

Rcdg5BLgi

Hello my fellow book enthusiasts!😍 This is the second part of the mini book reviews series that I started last week to try and catch up on some reviews. I have been having a rough few months so have been stuck in bed with nothing else really to do besides my favorite thing, READ!!!! I have to admit though, I read a good bit of novels and neglected reviewing them right away because of LIFE. So I bring you part 2 in my mini book review series! Woot! Woot! Being stuck at home has it’s perks because of how much you get to read! Yay! *happy dancing for reading* I am doing better though guys slowly but surely! I’m sorry if I am still late on commenting or replying. I have unfortunately been having technical difficulties and no internet!😱😱 *Crosses fingers it will be fixed in the next day* Love ya guys and giving you bear hugs and fist bumps!😄

Rcdg5BLgi

Well that’s not necessarily a bad thing. When I am not reading I am tending to my children which luckily I have had a lot of help with lately. The last few days I have been even more busy taking care of my kiddos because the horrible flu that’s been going around struck out house with a vengeance! Snotty board kids and buckets beside beds galore. I know that’s a bad image. *think happy thoughts* Anyways I wanted to share the second part of these great books I have read I’ve the last few months! Just because my reviews are quick and too the point doesn’t mean I didn’t LOVE them!😍

I want to thank NetGalley, the publishers and authors for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review. I appreciate this opportunity and all views expressed are my own.

Now let’s get to these reviews so we have more time to read!😍

Synopsis:

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas…or does it?

Somehow their drunken get-together turned into a wedding that neither one of them can remember or explain.

Waking up married was never part of the plan, but you know what they say about best laid plans…

Review: Once again, Christi Snow created the perfect romance that is sure to warm your heart! As soon as I saw a Christi Snow title on NetGalley, I had to request it! Christi creates beautiful novels that have such beautiful diversity and spread a message that “Love is Love”. I really enjoyed that the author writes novels about romances that aren’t typical and Found at the Jazz Club was a great edition to her collection of novels. I loved the characters and felt the age difference made it more unique and special. Highly recommended to romance lovers who want a taste of something different!

Synopsis: The predators become prey in a breathless novel of revenge from a USA Today bestselling author.

Still haunted by his wife’s murder—and stained by the blood of avenging it—FBI special agent Hatcher McGee can’t believe he’s being teamed up with rookie agent Korine Davenport. She is his most guilty secret—the one-night stand who almost cost him everything.

Korine has her own demons. As a child, she witnessed her father’s murder, and she’s spent her life waiting for the killer’s return. She and Hatcher are both looking for closure, but the disturbing case that draws them together could be their last.

When the mutilated body of a corrupt Savannah judge surfaces, Hatcher and Korine find themselves on the trail of a vigilante who is showing no mercy. Not for the predators who’ve gone free. And not for anyone who gets in the way.

As the body count rises, and as Hatcher’s and Korine’s own pasts unfold, they must risk their lives tracking a killer they’ve come to understand all too well. After all, the ends justify the means.

Review: Wow, what a thrilling novel! This book was a terrific page turner, that shouldn’t be missed! I really enjoyed the characters, the fast paced plot, and the setting! I was first intrigued by this novel when I saw the word “Savannah”. I always love reading books that are based in the South and I live only an hour away from Savannah. What made me love this book the most was the killer suspense and intensity!

Synopsis: When a young widow’s reclusive life in a charming beach town is interrupted by a surprise visitor, she is forced to reckon with dark secrets about her family, her late husband, and the past she tried to leave behind.

Lauren Adelman and her high school sweetheart, Rory Kincaid, are a golden couple. They marry just out of college as Rory, a star hockey player, earns a spot in the NHL. Their future could not look brighter when Rory shocks everyone-Lauren most of all-by enlisting in the U.S. Army. When Rory dies in combat, Lauren is left devastated, alone, and under unbearable public scrutiny.

Seeking peace and solitude, Lauren retreats to her family’s old beach house on the Jersey Shore. But this summer she’s forced to share the house with her overbearing mother and competitive sister. Worse, a stranger making a documentary about Rory tracks her down and persuades her to give him just an hour of her time.

One hour with filmmaker Matt Brio turns into a summer of revelations, surprises, and upheaval. As the days grow shorter and her grief changes shape, Lauren begins to understand the past-and to welcome the future.

Review: Wow, what a story that touched my heart and broke it at the same time! This book is beautifully written and discusses issues that are normally not discussed involving athletes and the physical effects it can have on them with being oushed forward. This book was hard to digest at times but truly worth the read!

Synopsis: Venus Black is a straitlaced A student fascinated by the study of astronomy—until the night she commits a shocking crime that tears her family apart and ignites a media firestorm. Venus refuses to talk about what happened or why, except to blame her mother. Adding to the mystery, Venus’s developmentally challenged younger brother, Leo, goes missing.

More than five years later, Venus is released from prison with a suitcase of used clothes, a fake identity, and a determination to escape her painful past. Estranged from her mother, and with her beloved brother still missing, she sets out to make a fresh start in Seattle, skittish and alone. But as new people enter her orbit—including a romantic interest and a young girl who seems like a mirror image of her former lost self—old wounds resurface, and Venus realizes that she can’t find a future while she’s running from her past.

Review: This was an epic read with fantastic characters! The children charaters really spoke to my heart and I felt a connection with them. I could relate to the dysfunction and awful things that occurred in this book. This story wasn’t just heartbreaking, it was also powerful and a must read! This was a beautifully written story that I won’t soon forget.

Synopsis: A HEARTWARMING TALE OF HOPE… AND THE MAGIC OF THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT
Grab your tissues for this sweet holiday book that is sure to become a must-read classic!!

After a series of tragic miscarriages, brought on by extreme stress and abuse, Sophie has had enough and chooses to walk away from her husband and his abusive family. Seeking a simpler way of life, she throws a dart at a map and decides to let fate move her wherever it lands.

With the settlement from her divorce, Sophie begins a new life in the small town of Holly Berry Ridge. She opens a consignment shop and is happy, despite her intense longing for the children that she was unable to bring to term.

Parker O’Brien, a local woodworker, rents a space in Sophie’s shop to sell his furniture. One piece, a beautiful cradle, becomes the object of Sophie’s obsession. The grieving young woman wishes upon the cradle every night when she closes the shop.

Her grandmother used to tell her, “A wish from the heart is a direct line to angel’s ears.”
Sophie wonders if the angels might ever hear her wishes. Will she ever be blessed with a child to cherish? Was the throw of the dart, which led her to Holly Berry Ridge, random? Or was an invisible hand guiding her way?

Sophie finds out that sometimes God answers wishes in the most mysterious of ways, and that happily ever after can mean something very different from what she once thought.

Review: Wow, this book was utterly amazing. My heart went from being broken to hopeful while reading this story. As a woman that has suffered multiple miscarriages including a late one at 18 weeks this story tugged at my soul and broke my heart but it beautifully put the pieces back together again.

Synopsis: A reformed smuggler finds himself embroiled in a mind-bending criminal conspiracy in this page-turning debut

Pastor Tommy Bosco runs a Winnipeg skid row mission that caters to ex-criminals and ex-addicts trying to make a better life. Sometimes that better life means leaving the city — and the good and bad guys — completely behind. A former smuggler, Bosco can make anyone disappear, faking deaths and extracting people across the Canada-U.S. border. But then his ex shows up, fresh from the murder of a biker-gang boss. She’s got plenty of baggage, including the biker’s cryptic ledger that everyone in Winnipeg’s underworld wants to get their hands on. Bosco finds himself a fugitive at the center of a conspiracy that has him staying far away from the cops, the hired hitmen, and even his dear old dad. Navigating through a harsh Prairie winter, Bosco must help his ex escape without having to make an escape himself.

Review: Wow, what a debut! The author drew me in this story immediately and never let up. The descriptions of the criminal aspects and addiction were fantastic. As seeing part of that world before I thought the author did a great job of depicting the world of streets and criminals. This was a fast paced novel with terrific characters that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Synopsis: Juliet Milagros Palante is leaving the Bronx and headed to Portland, Oregon. She just came out to her family and isn’t sure if her mom will ever speak to her again. But Juliet has a plan, sort of, one that’s going to help her figure out this whole “Puerto Rican lesbian” thing. She’s interning with the author of her favorite book: Harlowe Brisbane, the ultimate authority on feminism, women’s bodies, and other gay-sounding stuff.

Will Juliet be able to figure out her life over the course of one magical summer? Is that even possible? Or is she running away from all the problems that seem too big to handle?

With more questions than answers, Juliet takes on Portland, Harlowe, and most importantly, herself.

Review: This is such an important and fantastic novel. I devoured this novel in a few sittings and this one that will surely stick with you go a while. This is more than a story about being a lesbian and a feminist, this is a story about being true to yourself!

Synopsis:Macy’s school officially classifies her as “disturbed,” but Macy isn’t interested in how others define her. She’s got more pressing problems: her mom can’t move off the couch, her dad’s in prison, her brother’s been kidnapped by Child Protective Services, and now her best friend isn’t speaking to her. Writing in a dictionary format, Macy explains the world in her own terms—complete with gritty characters and outrageous endeavors. With an honesty that’s both hilarious and fearsome, slowly Macy reveals why she acts out, why she can’t tell her incarcerated father that her mom’s cheating on him, and why her best friend needs protection . . . the kind of protection that involves Macy’s machete.

I give this book 5 out of 5 Freakin Fantastic Stars! I am over the moon about this BOOK!

What attracted me to this book was the cover and the title, then I read the premise and was sold. This book meant more to me than pages in a book, I understood Macy. I was Macy.

I saw many reviews on this book and so many DNF this book because of the spelling and grammatical errors. I understand the need for proper grammer but this was about Macy expressing herself. I thought it was beautiful literature!

This was beyond realistic. When Macy battled Child Protective Services and dealt with all her raw and intense emotions, I was brought back to when I was considered the “disturbed” girl who didn’t have a chance in the system but proved them all wrong.

Being a teenager and facing more things than many adults will ever encounter in their lifetime is tough. When it’s the normal to go without food or deal with “the system” tearing your family apart, it’s tough as a teenager. You’re dealing with all these hormones and messed up emotions but have no idea what to do with it all because you have no choice but to be strong. I have seen the scary side of “the system” and my normal has been “disturbed” just like Macy’s. Macy comes off as a pain in the ass and an angry/crazy teenager. When Macy has all this on the outside, all she really is doing is trying to survive and hide her brokenness. I enjoyed all the characters in this story and loved their backgrounds. Alma and George were great in their sweet but complicated way. Macy’s mother was a complete hot mess. All the characters in this story were realistic in their own messed up and unique way.

This book made me laugh, smile, and cry but overall was an amazing experience that I will never forget. I can’t express enough how hilarious this book was and realistic at the same time. I highly recommend this book to whoever can relate or wants to experience something different! I am so glad that I was able to experience Macy’s journey and to read a disturbed girl’s masterpiece!

Quotes from “The Shadow Girl”

bara0225

“I have always known that I am invisible—I had no idea that eventually I would fade away completely.”

“Blackness. Nothingness. It was in the shape of a giant, hazy shadow, enveloping me, swallowing me, and digesting me into the unknown. It was my biggest fear and my ultimate fate.”

“As the freezing rain hit me, I could feel the stares…smoldering on my skin. I longed for invisibility. At times like this, the very curse that plagued me was also my protection.”

“…in school I felt more undetectable than ever. I walked through the crowded hallways like a human pinball, careening off one person and bouncing into another.”

Review: Wow!!! This book was epically amazing! When first reading this story, I felt it was going to be a simple and cute love story….

You and I belong together, it’s as simple as that. I’ve waited for you my whole life, I’m nothing without you. We’ll make this work, I promise.

I couldn’t have been more wrong! As things progressed I was thrown for twists and turns that I had no clue were coming! I absolutely adored Erica! In so many ways I was Erica. Erica loved others to a fault and felt out of step with her friends.

Annie Woods based this book off of actual life experiences. I was thoroughly impressed and enjoyed this book so much. Annie took her life experiences and weaved through these pages passion and talent creating a Young Adult Masterpiece that I won’t soon be able to forget. First Came Forever made me feel so much emotions and I felt like I couldn’t fathom waiting for the sequel! I give this book 5+++++ royal stars out of 5! I didn’t realize all the feels this book gave me! I couldn’t recommend this book enough! There also was some LGBT+ friendly stuff in here which I enjoyed. If it wasn’t the holidays with sick kids I would have finished this within hours!

Oh and I usually don’t like love triangles but this book had so much more to it than that! I will have to say after a certain incident didn’t sit well with me, I am #TeamTyler but man are my feelings all out of sorts! My only problem is how could you leave us with that ending Annie and make us wait?!! #WorthIT

I also want to do a shout out to Adrienne @ Darque Dreamer Reads for fangirling with me throughout my reading of this book! She just made things even more AWESOME! In the link above and HERE you can find her review of First Came Forever. She also posted a Q & A with Annie Woods with it!

One more thing I wanted to add is that not only was this book awesome so was the author. I was kind of scared that after making friends with Annie that I would hate if I didn’t enjoy this book. Well all of my fears were put at bay when reading this book and realizing it’s now one of my favorites of all time. I can see why Erica is based off Annie and why me and Annie connected! She even sent me a sweet signed copy! Yay! First Came Forever by Annie Woods is highly recommended!🤗💟😁😍💃💝📚

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo / Google Play

EXCERPT:

He jogged up the stairs to the fifth floor. Turning into the main hall, Vinnie made his way toward his apartment while digging in his pocket for the key and almost collided with three suitcases and a stack of boxes blocking his path.

Someone was moving out…or in, given the person was fiddling with the lock—with a hanger. He had moved in a couple days before his trip to California and hadn’t met any neighbors, but he did recall seeing a tall blonde woman walking out of this apartment one morning as he came in from his morning jog. This one was a few inches over five feet, and although he couldn’t see much, dark hair peeked out of the white knit cap on her head.

“Hey, can I help you?” he called.

She shrieked and dropped the hanger. “I can’t find my key and locked myself out.”

He knew that voice. “If that’s the case, why don’t you call the super?”

“My phone’s dead, and I don’t have his number.”

Vinnie pulled out his phone. “Then it’s a good thing I have it. I’ll give him a buzz.”

“No!” she cried and turned to face him.

Wide brown eyes framed by long brown lashes stared up at him.

“Hope?”

She pushed back the cap and brushed aside the bangs that fell into her eyes. “Vinnie. Funny meeting you here.”

“Same goes. You don’t live here,” Vinnie countered, surprised to be faced with one of the pantry chefs from where he worked.

Hope raised her hands. “I know how this looks, but I can explain.”

“You can explain why you’re trying to break into this apartment?”

“It’s my cousin Faith’s place. And I wasn’t breaking in.”

Vinnie raised an eyebrow and shifted his gaze to the hanger on the ground.

“Okay, so maybe it seems as though I was breaking in, but the key she gave me no longer works.” She reached in her coat pocket and withdrew a key similar to Vinnie’s.

“Did you try calling your cousin?”

“Gee, no, I didn’t think of that,” she sneered. “She’s on a cruise and then staying in Florida a few days for business. I wasn’t kidding about my phone dying and not knowing the super’s number.”

Vinnie felt a pain in his temple. Probably from not having enough to eat or drink on the red-eye from LA. “Fine, let’s get your stuff in my place. You can use my phone.”

Hope grabbed a handle of a suitcase. “Thanks, Vin. You’re nicer than people at work say.”

He paused while unlocking his door. Well, hell. Is that what they say about me? Guess he needed to do damage control with his staff. Even though his parents owned Trattoria DiFrancesco, Vinnie was the head chef and in charge of hiring of anyone who worked in the kitchen.

Including the pretty spitfire who had just swept past him, Hope Mastriano.

He hoisted the stack of boxes and followed her inside. When she headed back out, he perused the hall to see how much more stuff she had.

There were two more suitcases and a pet carrier.

“You run away or something?” Vinnie asked.

“Moved out of Steve’s place. I’m done with that deadbeat.”

“On Thanksgiving Day and with nowhere to go?”

“It’s been long overdue. Besides, I thought I could crash at Faith’s until I figured out my next step.”

“And in there?” He nodded to the carrier.

Hope raised it up a few inches. “This is Lucky, my cat.”

Vinnie was not a fan of cats, with their sharp eyes and sneaky ways. He peeked inside and into the green eyes of a white cat. He closed the front door and stepped around Hope’s stuff, including the cat, which she pulled out of the carrier. Lucky leaned forward and sniffed him before letting out a soft mew.

Between the pixie-haired cutie and the cat, the peace and relaxation he had found out west was a distant memory. By the time he got to the trattoria for Thanksgiving dinner, Vinnie was going to need a beer or glass of wine.

Possibly both.

The start of the Bound to the Bad Boy trilogy by Wall Street Journal bestselling author, Alexis Abbott

I never knew what he sacrificed to save my life. I never knew why he abandoned me all those years ago.

My soulmate. My first love. The only one I’ve ever wanted.

I moved on, tried to forget his smile, the way his hands felt on my skin.

But when my life gets dangerous again, he walks back into my store, white knight to the rescue.

The Mafia is breathing down our necks, threatening our second chance at romance.

But what they don’t realize is that our love makes us strong. Makes us dangerous.

The Mafia wants to kill us both, but we’re not going down without a fight.

This is a full-length romantic suspense novel that is Part 1 in an exciting new trilogy by Alexis Abbott. Explicit language. Safe from cheating.

The complete trilogy:

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

EXCERPT:

“After everything that’s happened today, I never expected a stranger to take that kind of time,” Serena says with a sigh.

“What’s happened today?” I ask, quirking a brow, and I see her cheeks tinge with a bit of color.

“Wh- oh, nothing. The guy who caused the accident just kind of ran off, is all,” she lies, averting her eyes to the setting sun outside.

“Dirty move,” I say, crossing my arms. “Good thing you run a soap store.”

She just stares at me in disbelief for a beat before she bursts into a laugh at my awful pun, covering her face for a moment. “Oh…wow,” she says, starting to take a few steps toward me. “Who are you?”

“Someone who can tell you’ve had too much on your plate for one day,” I say. Every muscle in my body wants to take a step toward her as well, to play the game between us that she’s slipping into already. I want to flirt with her, charm her all over again, even as a stranger, take her out for a good time. If I’m really honest, I want to bend her over that counter and take her right here and now.

But for her safety, I have to keep my distance.

“Oh, who am I kidding,” she says, running a hand through her hair and looking out the door. “You’re right. Today’s been a nightmare.” She looks back to me, eyes flitting up and down my form. “Thank you, though. Really. God, I feel so silly, you didn’t come here to-”

“Get some rest,” I say, her name on the tip of my tongue before I reel it back in. “I’ll come back by tomorrow. Maybe I can take care of any other messes that come up,” I say, a boyish smile on my face.

I see the color flush into her cheeks, and she loses her words for a moment before she says, “I’ll be here!”

She was a spoiled brat when I knew her, but even then, it was the easiest thing in the world to get her off her guard and swooning. But I liked that about her. She didn’t feel shame for her feelings. She felt everything intensely. It was good to see that hadn’t changed.

There’s so much more I want to say, but I step out into the cool air without another word to her as I hear her voice calling, “Wait, I didn’t get your name!”

I pretend not to hear.

Seeing how happy she is now, I can’t let our tangled past flood into her life and upset everything she has. She’s running her own business, for god’s sake.

How would she feel about me if she knew I was an enforcer for the mafia?

Black and Blue by Ily Jack’s Book Blitz and Giveaway

Black & Blue
Ily Jacks
Publication date: November 9th 2017
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, LGBTQ+, Romance

Trouble seems to follow me everywhere. No doubt accepting a ride from a sexy, fierce biker on a rainy night seems like another bad move. Except this one desperate leap of faith brings Declan into my life.

From unreadable machine to possessive lover, he challenges me to want more.

Can I finally throw off the shackles of my tough life and embrace the promise of a good man?

Black & Blue is a standalone M/M romance with graphic sexual content, violent situations, and extreme profanity.

Goodreads / Amazon

EXCERPT:

Stumbling from the Harley, my legs feel like jelly. My starving stomach no longer growls, now as numb as the rest of my cold, battered body.

“Where are we?” I ask when the biker only stares at me.

Soft rain soaks his thick, dark hair and beard. He looks like a wild man, ready to skin and devour his kill. I’m desperate to look away from his nearly black eyes and remain in control of myself. I can’t, though, because he both terrifies and intrigues me.

“I live in the apartment upstairs. You can crash here until you figure things out.”

“Thanks.”

When his hand jerks forward, I immediately flinch and expect more violence after a shitty day that’ll never end. His hand grips the back of my neck, sending panic and pain through me. I fist my hands and prepare to fight him. Exhausted after so long running, I never expect his lips to crush mine. He forces my mouth open and tastes me roughly.

I can’t think. Nothing about the biker’s earlier demeanor made me believe he desired me, so his kiss throws me off guard. I never consider what he might expect from me in return for a safe place to stay for the night. No, instead my fear violently shifts into the kind of lust I’ve long imagined and never enjoyed.

Before I can meet his passion with mine, the biker releases me and turns away. I’m left rejected and desperate, yet unable to show either emotion. My only option is to follow him obediently.

Synopsis: Rookie Detective and bar owner Izzy O’Donnell is on course with an investigation with a serial killer who is leaving Bible verses wrapped around body parts of the murdered women. Izzzy has the help of this task with her partners Moreno and Cal. Moreno is ambiguous and her dad’s former partner Cal is crabby as hell.

Izzy feels out of sorts because of some unexplained dreams that she has been having and they push her harder to crack down on the case. Along with her partners, Izzy has her sidekick Apple Macintosh that carries a “telepathic” rabbit(Norman) whom has the supposed secret ability of smelling the victims on Izzy. To say the least Apple is a special person and carries the special rabbit around in a baby sling.

With being a rookie, being a co-owner of a bar with her dad, and having these off the wall partners it really makes you wonder, can Izzy catch this serial killer?

Review: I give this book 4 out of 5 retro-tastic stars! I really enjoyed the unique environment the diner gave me reading this cute story. I have always enjoyed the look of retro diners and different things from the 50’s era! I thought this book was fun, sweet and cute. Overall, I really enjoyed this read. This book made me smile quite a few times. The only thing I didn’t enjoy quite a bit was I didn’t like the cliffhanger. I’m just not a leave me at the cliff until the next book comes out kind of girl. I also felt that Esther got a bit too dramatic at times. All in all, I would recommend this book and it was quite enjoyable.

EXCERPT:

They walked in silence as they weaved around tourists of all nationalities. Blanca soaked in the diversity and half-heartedly discerned the different languages she heard in passing, picking up a phrase here and there as the Christmas spirit thrived among the bustling crowd.

In the distance, Julien leaned against the trunk of his car with his arms folded across his broad pecs. He was dressed in a dark blue cable knit sweater and gray slacks like he’d just come from a semi-formal event even though the sun had only been up for about an hour. He tilted his head to the side, and his blond hair fell in large, unkempt waves covering half of his face. Neither a smile nor a frown played upon his full lips, but the subtle wrinkles at the corner of his eye betrayed his excitement in seeing all of them.

He looked so beautiful … beautiful and sad.

Maybe, heartbroken might be a better word.

Blanca’s footsteps fell into a slower pace as she inspected him. It was one thing to know in the recesses of her memory that she had seen … and touched … and, let’s just come right out and be blunt … licked all of his bits and parts. But it was an entirely other matter when she had him trapped in her iPhone as nothing but an extreme close-up of sea-glass-bleached-by-the-sun eyes with a wicked grin that could seduce her outright. Except that she was impervious to his moves thanks to their lack of continental proximity.

But, seeing him again face to face sent an unexpected and entirely unwelcome zing of feels to her bits and parts, and an overwhelming urge to turn around and hop the next flight out kicked her in the chest right where she felt the biggest zing of all.

The gravity of the moment rushed up on all of them as Julien reached out to Chase first. Both men embraced one another, planting kisses on each other’s cheeks and breathing out their condolences over the loss of their grandmother.

They had grown up together at Julien’s family’s estate. Chase, though American-born, had spent almost all of his summers living in Champagne with Julien and his family, which was just a short walk across the driveway to his grandmother’s home, according to Chase’s explanation during one of their flights.

Julien pulled back from his cousin and faced Maxie, gripping both her shoulders and tugging her into a stoic kiss that barely grazed her cheek. When he finally turned to Blanca, his expression shifted to a curious eagerness that bordered on desperation, and her pulse decided to skyrocket.

What the?

“I am so pleased you’ve come to see me, to see my home. I wish it were under better circumstances.” Julien cupped Blanca’s face with his ice-cold palms and leaned down to kiss her cheek, catching the corner of her mouth causing her breath to hitch out loud.

As Blanca searched for a reply, Julien turned and opened the trunk and, with Chase’s help, jigsaw puzzled the suitcases and duffel bags into his car while Maxie shuffled Blanca into the back seat with her.

She crossed one leg over the other and started bouncing it back and forth.

“Are you okay?” Maxie patted Blanca’s white jeans-clad leg. “You’re going to stab one of these guys in the back with that spiked heel on your boot if you don’t calm down. What gives?”

“Nothing. Everything. I probably shouldn’t have come.”

“Why? Julien obviously wants you here. He only asked you every day for the last week if you’re still coming, and you even cancelled appointments for him. You can’t back out now. Besides, it’s Christmas. It’s our duty to spread some joy up in these guys.”

Spreading definitely leads to joy.

“I just don’t want him to get the wrong idea. I’m only here to see more of France. I didn’t think—” she lowered her voice to a whisper as Julien and Chase walked around the sides of the car. “I’d ever see him again, or, if I ever did, it would be like a whole year from now at another one of Chase’s parties or after our routine chit-chat eventually lost its steam.”

“So what? You talk to him all the time. What’s the big deal?”

“He’s just a friend. I don’t regret fooling around when we met, but I can’t be more than that now.”

Maxie chuckled and shook her head. “No one’s asking you to.”

Tell that to my heart.

Julien and Chase got into the car, slamming their creaky doors and continuing their conversation in French as Julien fired up the engine and pulled away from the airport. Maxie shrugged at Blanca and leaned in, expecting a translation.

Blanca listened for a seconds, tugging her fingers out of her black leather gloves. “The funeral is tomorrow afternoon with a huge gathering afterward, and it’s going to be packed,” she whispered. “We’re also the last to show up. Almost everyone’s here in the city. They’re, uh, he’s offering, no wait, he said you guys should stay with Chase’s parents at his grandma’s house because of all the drama he caused the last time you three were under one roof.” Hmph. “Which he’s still sorry about,” she added, under her breath. Then, her eyes flew open, and she swatted Julien’s shoulder with her gloves. “Hey, where am I supposed to stay?”

“With me,” Julien replied, then continued his conversation with Chase.

“Hellllo? Don’t I have any say in this decision?”

“You can stay in one of my parents’ guestrooms. I’m sure they won’t mind, but wouldn’t you rather keep me company? You spend all your nights with me on FaceTime as it is.”

He’s got me there.

Blanca leaned in and whispered into Maxie’s ear to ensure they couldn’t hear her. “If things get weird staying with Chase’s parents, I’ll fake a meltdown and get us into a hotel, and if Julien gets all grabby hands on me while I’m staying with him, I’ll, eh, I guess I’ll just see how it goes.”

Damn, I’m weak.

“Atta girl.”

“Shut it.”

Chase twisted around in his seat. “What are you two scheming now?”

“Nothing,” they both exclaimed at the same time.
