Seventeen-year-old Alice and her mother have spent most of Alice’s life on the road, always a step ahead of the uncanny bad luck biting at their heels. But when Alice’s grandmother, the reclusive author of a cult-classic book of pitch-dark fairy tales, dies alone on her estate, the Hazel Wood, Alice learns how bad her luck can really get: Her mother is stolen away―by a figure who claims to come from the Hinterland, the cruel supernatural world where her grandmother’s stories are set. Alice’s only lead is the message her mother left behind: “Stay away from the Hazel Wood.”
Alice has long steered clear of her grandmother’s cultish fans. But now she has no choice but to ally with classmate Ellery Finch, a Hinterland superfan who may have his own reasons for wanting to help her. To retrieve her mother, Alice must venture first to the Hazel Wood, then into the world where her grandmother’s tales began―and where she might find out how her own story went so wrong.
I give this book 3.5 out of 5 Dark and Twisted Stars! After reading this book, I had a very difficult time deciding how I felt about this story.
I don’t know if I hated it or loved it. To be a bit honest I am a bit confused, still.
I will start off with the things that didn’t really do it for me and that there was some things in the end that I felt like “Really?!” I felt some of the things that held significance for me in the beginning just went a starnge direction but this book was definitely a strange one. I also didn’t like Alice’s anger issues even though I sympathised with her as well but some of it just made me uncomfortable.
To the good and positive about this book! This story was beautifully written and was definitely one of a kind. I really enjoyed the dark retelling of Alice in Wonderland and I want a real life copy of Tales of the Hinterland! This story got chillingly and creepily good in some parts!
I was stunned by descriptions and gore it carried. I loved Ellery Finch! His character was my fave and loved his kind soul and need for escape. Overall, I really liked this book and do think many will LOVE it!
I like the cover.
And Carolyn Jones was so sexy as Morticia Addams in the TV series, so thanks for those gifs, Dani. 🙂 x
Best wishes, Pete. x

You might like it, Kim but it’s always safer to check it out at the library first to see if it’s for you!😍🤗 The cover was gorgeous and the writing was remarkable but I felt so torn on this book. I didn’t even know how to rate it but I know there are definitely some elements of it you will love with the creepy and dark fairy tells!😱😱

I actually loved this book. It is odd, and I understand the mixed reviews it’s gotten, but it was so dark and twisty and beautiful. Stark, and beautiful. It kept me guessing. And the feat of imagination that went into creating it! I was in awe. I couldn’t put it down. Having said that, I don’t know if I’ll pick it up again… perhaps a bit too dark in places to be a comfortable read, for me.

Thanks so much for sharing and stopping by my page! YAy! Looking back at this book, I am not sure how I would rate it now but it’s kind of a trigger for me since I dissociate or rather yet astral travel daily and since I am finally at a place in my life where I am trying to find myself and not be scared, I guess certain things can be hard to read but you are absolutely right about the descriptions! Just gorgeous!💜

Ah see, now I totally understand your point of view on this book. It does have a trippy vibe, a disassociative theme to it, and not having that experience myself even I found it a bit like… woah… ❤️ I did love the writing though, and I thought it was completely different from anything I’d read before. Quite starkly beautiful. Quite challenging. I’ve been really interested to see what other people thought of it, from your comments
