ARC Book Review: Tilting by Nicole Larkin-Rachel’s Random Resources

I would like to thank the author and Rachel’s Random Resources for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest opinionion.

Tilting, A Memoir

We only learned about our father’s girlfriend after he became deathly ill and lay in a coma 120 miles from our home.

Overhearing the nurse tell Linda–since I was nine I had called my mom by her first name–about the girlfriend who came in almost every day to visit him when we weren’t there confirmed that the last moment of normal had passed us by without our realizing it. Up to then our family had unhappily coexisted with Dad flying jumbo jets to Asia while we lived in Montana. We finally came together to see Dad through his illness, but he was once again absent from a major family event–unable to join us from his comatose state. This is the moment when our normal existence tilted.
Dad recovered, but the marriage ailed, as did Linda, with cancer. Our family began to move down an entirely different path with silver linings we wouldn’t see for many years.

In this candid and compassionate memoir which recently won a Gold Award in The Wishing Shelf Book Award, Nicole Harkin describes with an Impressionist’s fine eye the evolution of a family that is quirky, independent, uniquely supportive, peculiarly loving and, most of all, marvelously human.

Wow, what a book!!!😍 It’s been a while since I read a memoir and that’s pretty much because it takes a lot for me to like one but this true story surpassed my expectations. This story filled me with all kinds of emotions and I loved how realistic it was. I felt like I was reading an entertaining fiction novel instead of a memoir many times through this story’s plot line. I happily give this memoir 5 stars and would recommend it to anyone who needs something in their life to give them reassurance that life can completely chaotic and no matter how bad we think we are handling it, we can make it through and we are not alone! Highly recommended!

Cuttin’ Heads

Aldo Evans is a desperate man. Fired from his job and deeply in debt, he struggles to balance a broken family life with his passion for music.

Luce Figura is a troubled woman. A rhythmic perfectionist, she is haunted by childhood trauma and scorned by her religiously devout mother.

Ross McArthur is a wiseass. Orphaned as an infant and raised by the state, his interests include game shows, home-grown weed, occasional violence and the bass guitar.

They are Public Alibi. A rock n’ roll band going nowhere fast.

When the sharp-suited, smooth talking producer Gappa Bale offers them a once in a lifetime chance to make their dreams come true, they are caught up in a maelstrom of fame, obsession, music and murder.

Soon, Aldo, Luce and Ross must ask themselves: is it really better to burn out than to fade away?

My Thoughts_1 What a badass book that delivered from the very beginning until the end! This story had the perfect blend of elements to make me swoon with great characterization, a well thought out plot, and freakin’ sex drugs and rock n roll, baby! I haven’t been reading much horror of late but I am so glad I decided to read this one because it was just the right amount of gore and thrills that I was seeking! I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone who loves the music industry and a great thriller! I can’t wait to see what the author comes out with next!

Author Bio –

Prizewinning author D.A. Watson spent several years working in bars, restaurants and call centres before going back to university with the half-arsed plan of becoming a music teacher. Halfway through his degree at the University of Glasgow, he discovered he was actually better at writing, and unleashed his debut novel, In the Devil’s Name, on an unsuspecting public in the summer of 2012. Plans of a career in education left firmly in the dust, he later gained his masters degree in Creative Writing from the University of Stirling.

He has since published two more novels, The Wolves of Langabhat and Cuttin’ Heads, a handful of non-fiction pieces, several short stories including Durty Diana, which was nominated for a Pushcart Prize in 2016, and the Burns parody Tam O’ Shatner, which in 2017 came runner up in the Dunedin Robert Burns Poetry Competition, and was a competition winner at the Falkirk Storytelling Festival.

He lives with his family in Western Scotland.

New San Francisco is the last city standing on a world ravaged by storms of ash and debris. The city survived by putting the ideals of the American dream on steroids and inspiring its people to persevere, though they have become ruthless in the process. Its citizens are ruled by the General, who has made sure that his people understand that gentleness and pity have become weaknesses that nature no longer tolerates.

Now Steve and Leslie must choose whether they will apply for the General’s once in a lifetime opportunity to “Rise from the Ashes” and join the Inner Circle that rules the city. If they don’t, they will be damned to spend the rest of their lives in the ghettos of Edingburg, a place where virtual reality has become a government-subsidized addiction.

For Steve, the choice is easy. His loyalties lie with the IRA, a revolutionary army led by a voice only known as “Mom.” They are trying to overthrow the General and free the people of New San Francisco from the cruelties of the City Guard. Steve’s mission is to broadcast a recording of a speech that a famous philosopher died to tell. Many thousands have and will perish to get this message out, but is anyone willing to listen?

Every wrist in the stadium beeped. Every boy and girl glanced down at the face of their watch. “00:10” then “:09” then “:08.” Everyone turned their heads to the west. There it was. Right on time, as always. The nightly storm. A wall of blackness had lurched up into the sky, swallowing the setting sun. The hairs on Steve’s neck stood up, urging him to get the hell out
of there.

Instead he grabbed Leslie’s hand, who sat quietly quivering next to him, instinctively pressing her bow into her head for comfort. Steve knew her shaking wasn’t coming from Line’s yelling, the storm, or even the tank pointing at them. Her quivers never came from the barrel of a gun, no, the ragging agony she held within her was the very same thing that pushed him back into the sheets when the sun finally rose—are we going to lose each other?

Leslie’s mind pushed the feeling away for at least another moment. “It’ll be all right,” she whispered. Her brown eyes guided him to the dozens of mortar tubes pointing upward and outward on the vibrant green field and then to the perfect line of churning ash that approached the stands.

“Unity can only be achieved and be maintained when it is the STRONG who come together and fly under one flag! We, like no other in the world, have created a unity that has never broken, has never FLINCHED! When the rest of the world saw THAT—” Line’s long arm pointed at the coming avalanche of black— “They all fell to pieces!”

The earth began to quake as the wall rose over them. Someone screamed. The mortars on the field fired as one at the roiling sky. The blackness spilled over the stadium, then slid over the perimeter of the frizzing wall of static that had encapsulated the field. No Phoenix Cycler had seen—only heard rumors from past Cycle Pref parties—this blackness that was sliding over and them whispering their deaths.

Book Review

I really enjoyed reading this novel. This novel makes you think about disasters that could be possible in this messed up world.  This book was enjoyable to read between other novels and at a slow pace. Reading this book, I started thinking about different concepts and how things in the world really are. I enjoyed the author’s concepts and ideas and found some things definitely relateable. I have to admit that I enjoy thinking about the “What Ifs” and enjoy reading dystopian novels and about some conspiracy theories so when I listened to this book on my kindle, my son’s father just loved it.*tin foil hats in hand, ready to go* He was the one that gobbled it up and read it the most. He is a big fanImage result for dystopian gif of Sy-fy and Dystopian fiction. Some of the things mentioned in this book went over my head a little but this was just an ARC so I am sure there will be tweaks to be fixed but I found that this dystopian  novel quite enjoyable and am excited to see what the author comes out with next. Big thanks for this opportunity to the author and Reads & Reels Blog Tours!

Bob is pretty dope. Firstly, his name is Bob, so…yea. Second, have you seen him rock that suit while in a maximum security prison? Epic.

Yea. That’s Bob. No psychological scarring with that author. Nope. Totally fine.

Gosh he looks good in suits.

Hey Have you read The Phoenix Cycle? He wrote that.

One suggestion before you read it and become one of those fans that leaves him roses by his doormat. Read her slowly. This book is not Twilight. She’s deeper than that. Take your time with her. Show the book you care. Cradle it and make it feel loved. If you do, she’ll be good to you. Go too fast and you’ll have no idea why she’s acting so crazy.

Backdoor Storytelling – And Sidetellings. And Retellings.

 glass slipper

Thank you Dani! It’s great to be on your blog today!

We’re talking about the different variations of retellings today, and what it is about them that charms us so much. I’m going to make up some of my own definitions, because I’m of the type of person that does that.

So let’s start with the made up definitions for retellings, backdoortellings, and sidetellings.

A retelling follows the same character as the original tale, but twists major elements of the story.
A backdoortelling follows a lesser character through the same events, offering a new perspecitve.
A sidetelling follows an equivalent character, offering a new perspective andpossible twists.

The film A.I. is a retelling of Pinocchio.
The novel Ender’s Shadow is a backdoortelling of Ender’s Game.
The picture book The True Story of the Three Little Pigs! is a sidetelling of The Three Little Pigs and the Big, Bad Wolf.

Think I’m making these definitions up just to look smart and unnecessarily subcategorize Happily?
You’re probably right.

But anyways, what is it about these new approaches to traditional stories that we love so much? Why do readers and viewers love to see a story they already know, told in new ways?

I’m sure there are many different reasons. One I’d like to talk about is predictability. We like these retellings because of their predictability.

It might sound slightly counter intuitive. Normally, when you hear “predictable” ascribed to a story, it’s a bad mark against it. And yet, there is a certain degree of predictability that we want to see in stories.

We can usually guess the ending—we still don’t want people to tell it to us and spoil it, but we have a hunch that the good guys are going to win, the lost dog will be found, the lovers will be ruineted, the athlete will overcome, etc. Does this always happen? Of course not. Is that okay? Of course it is. But generally, we can guess the outcome.

For example, in Star Wars: A New Hope, we know right from the beginning that there’s an evil empire, a group of rebels opposing them, a battlestation that can destroy planets, and plans that will reveal its weakness.

Does it take a genius to predict that the rebels will (spoiler alert, I guess) blow up the Death Star? Hardly.

But how will they do it? That’s what we don’tknow, and that’s what’s exciting to find out. It’s exciting to see our predictions be correct, and it’s exciting to see the twists that will make it happen (or will delay it happening).

And that is a rather roundabout way of explaining one reason why we enjoy retellings as much as we do. It’s because the audience has an even higher ability to predict what might happen, because we already know one version of the story. The fun, then, is in seeing how the storyteller is going to introduce the elements we’ve predicted. If they’re not creative or surprising enough, it feels bland. If they’re too creative or surprising, it comes off as untrue to the original story. But if it hits the sweet spot, where it provides the perfect twist on the reader’s expectations—a masterpiece!

There are other reasons, I’m sure, why we love retellings—nostalgia or familiarity being one, I’m sure, but I wanted to discuss one that people might not have considered, as well as a concept that applies to storytelling in general. It isn’t the often predictable outcomes that surprise and delight audiences. It’s how they got there.

Have your own theory of why people love retellings? Have a favorite retelling yourself? Or maybe want to say how upset you are with me for spoiling the ending of Star Wars: A New Hope? Let us know in the comments!

Quotes from “The Shadow Girl”

“I have always known that I am invisible—I had no idea that eventually I would fade away completely.”

“Blackness. Nothingness. It was in the shape of a giant, hazy shadow, enveloping me, swallowing me, and digesting me into the unknown. It was my biggest fear and my ultimate fate.”

“As the freezing rain hit me, I could feel the stares…smoldering on my skin. I longed for invisibility. At times like this, the very curse that plagued me was also my protection.”

“…in school I felt more undetectable than ever. I walked through the crowded hallways like a human pinball, careening off one person and bouncing into another.”

***Readers who like books by Debra Burroughs and Melinda Leigh will like, The Stone Arch Secret.

Twenty-eight-year-old anthropologist, Lilly Allaire, receives a phone call telling her that Dax is dead. The cause of death is unknown.
At the age of fourteen, best friends, Lilly and Dax, experience a traumatic incident. After the incident, Dax is institutionalized in a psychiatric hospital in a catatonic state. For Dax, his memory loss is a subconscious act of self-preservation, a blocking out of all memories. Lilly still suffers a blocked memory of that day and has frequent nightmares.
After Dax’s funeral, Lilly decides to go back to Salmon Brook, her hometown, to find out the truth about the mysterious incident that destroyed Dax’s life. While searching for clues to the incident, Lilly has a chance meeting with a former high school classmate, Noah Hawthorne.
Noah remembers Lilly as his high school secret crush and offers to help her. Together, they try to unravel the mysterious incident that plagues Lilly’s dreams and turns them into nightmares. They soon realize that their hometown has a deadly secret and both their lives are now in danger. However, Noah has a secret of his own that puts Lilly in harm’s way.

I absolutely LOVED The Stone Arch Secret by K.D Dowdall! I have to be honest and say I was a bit sceptical when I saw it. I mean the premise sounded awesome but this was a new author for me. I am so glad I gave this book a shot! The story had a great mystery and a sweet romance without the freaky, freaky added to it which I enjoyed!

You guys know I love to add to my review when a book I have read can relate to my life. Well this one did in a couple ways but mainly what Dax and Lilly went through stuck out the most to me.

As some know, I was in and out of institutions growing up because of a severe mental illness caused by some severe trauma I went through as a child. Well Lilly still goes through blocked memories and nightmares. I have night terrors about every night and because of having D.I.D. I battle amnesia from different parts of my life.

The reason I could relate to what Dax webt through was because I was institutionalized atleast 3/4s of my life and I also went through catatonia for about a year. I couldn’t believe when I came to that I got to that point but I did.

The characterisation in this book was fantastic and the plot was great. Even though this was a light read, it was full of depth. I won’t soon forget The Stone Arch Secret by K.D Dowdall and I highly recommend this story!

Karen DeMers Dowdall (K. D. Dowdall), born in New England, has a Master’s degree in Nursing and a PhD in Nutrition, spent her elementary-grade school years in the small farming community of Salmon Brook, settled in 1680 by a stalwart group of Europeans. She grew up exploring its hauntingly dark forest preserve, swimming in Salmon Brook with a plethora of the unexplained, exploring Rock Fall Caves, and ice-skating on a “haunted” pond in winter.
Karen has also traveled abroad and has lived in the Republic of China, Saudi Arabia, and England. Karen’s new fiction, Garrett’s Bones, is a mystery, murder with with a dash of romance and the paranormal. Karen’s first novel, Delphi Altair Strange Beginnings, is a fantasy fiction adventure story. Reads & Reels Blog Tours Book Review: Follow the Snowflakes

I want to thank Reads & Reels and Angelina Kerner for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review. I appreciate this opportunity. All views and opinions expressed are my own.

Book Blurb:

At 28, it’s bad to be single. After four years of relationship struggles, Cat is ready to try anything.

That’s when her friend tells her about her class’ Dear Santa letters. One little boy asked for a new mommy, and she suggests Cat meets the kid’s dad, just to see where things go. Cat figures it can’t hurt…until she meets a stranger in the midst of a car accident. The man is handsome with a sad look in his eyes. He still wears a wedding band and she’s not sure his heart’s available, even if he makes her heart race. But, maybe he’s a widower? Cat wonders if she should resign herself to being an old maid, or whether she could possibly be the answer to a little boy’s Christmas wish, unless there’s a third option – a future with the stranger.

Review: I give this book 5 out of 5 heartwarming holiday stars! I am so thankful that Reads & Reels reached out to me regarding this holiday novella! I have been in this wicked slump lately and haven’t been in the Christmas spirit at all and have been rather depressed being stuck in bed with health concerns. Reading this novella certainly was what the doctor ordered! While reading Follow the Snowflakes, I felt my heart instantly warm and all that I could focus on was wanting more. I fell in love with the characters in this book and felt that I could relate to Cat and Regina! If you love Hallmark movies, I highly recommend this sweet novella! Angelina Kerner took her passion and dreams and created a holiday romance masterpiece. I was a little nervous about reading this novella because I follow Angelina on WordPress and she is a fellow blogger but from page one she put my worries at bay! YAY!💖❄ Also I enjoyed her shoutout to all fellow WordPress bloggers in her dedication! Woot, Woot! This book was also open minded and fun. The story was open minded towards the LGBT+ community and also had a fun Christmas party scene!

Okay, so the party wasn’t like this but I had to add this GIF. Lol. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it helped me get out of this nasty slump I was in. I even enjoyed that it was a short novella! I love novellas because you can hit it and quit it! Wam bam, thank you ma’am! Some novellas the author just can’t pull it off, but in this story that is clearly not the case! I know I am rambling a bit lovelies, but I truly want to share my joy of this holiday family oriented novella! I felt like I was inside of a Hallmark movie and this book gave me hope for brighter days! I hope everyone has a fantastic week and a lovely holiday season! Oh and one more thing, I loved how open minded this book was with different religious and spiritual beliefs! The main character even celebrated a Pagan holiday. I am an open minded Christian but love diversity and open minded characters! Thanks Ms. Kerner for a remarkable experience that I won’t soon forget!

Angelina Kerner’s writing career started at a young age when she discovered that her creativity could be channeled through a bit of ink and paper.

She moved around during her younger years from Novosibirsk and Kaluga Russia to finally settle in the San Francisco Bay Area, California. This startling contrast between the fierce snow of Siberia and the bright sun of the American West is a crucial source of inspiration and humility: the forces of people is to be found not only in their spirits, but in their land too.

Angelina’s curiosity in the human condition led her to pursue courses in psychology and blossomed into a master’s degree in Topographical science. It was with a burning fire that she rejected the status quo offered to her generation, and after many meaningless jobs, she decided that writing could be the canvas in which she could express this dichotomy. While working full time behind counters and registers, she persisted in supporting her family, her full-time coursework, and her creative dreams.

She dared to believe in her talents, and most importantly, in her ability to make a real mark on this world.

Like any creative soul, there was time for doubts, self-loathing, and loneliness, but never fear. She worked on countless experimental narratives, universes, genres, until her voice crystallized into her first published narrative. She is now the author of Deity’s Soulmate and Seven Hours: Challenge Accepted. Her next project involves a competition for a beautiful phoenix. Angelina currently divides her time between her family, work, writing, lots of cats, and two celestial dragons.

England, 1934. Hester Blake, an ambitious girl from an industrial Northern town, finds a job as a lady’s maid in a small aristocratic household.

Despite their impressive title and glorious past, the Fitzmartins are crumbling under the pressures of the new century. And in the cold isolation of these new surroundings, Hester ends up hopelessly besotted with her young mistress, Lady Lucy.

Accompanying Lucy on her London Season, Hester is plunged into a heady and decadent world. But hushed whispers of another war swirl beneath the capital… and soon, Hester finds herself the keeper of some of society’s most dangerous secrets…

Review: I give this book 5 out of 5 historical romance stars! I just loved this book! I was so hesitant about reading this when the author asked if I would be a host for her blog tour. I haven’t read a historical book in awhile and wasn’t sure how I would feel about it. Thank heavens, I said yes to this author! A Pearl for my Mistress was filled with forbidden love, was well written and great history!

This book had me up late turning pages to see how the character’s fate would lead. I loved Hester and Lucy. With having two completely different backgrounds, it was beautiful to see how their romance took off and how their hearts intertwined. I highly recommend this book!

Review: I give this book 4 out of 5 Twisted Stars! Wow what an enthralling thriller! I was blown away with how many twists and turns were in this novel! There was so many surprises and it was hard to keep up with everything at all times! I can’t go into the plot that much because it would cause major spoiler alerts, but I felt the plot was very well written and descriptive! The reason I am not giving this 5 stars is because I was confused on how one of the characters “orchestrated something” but felt all upset about something at the same time but I know people can be so confusing. I can’t yet again explain it right because of the whole spoiler thingamajig but this was an emotional roller coaster! One minute I’m totally invested and think I am all Ms. Sherlock Homeboy telling my good friend Kim at By Hook or By Book that I had it all figured out in my head but of course this book brought me so much twists than I thought possible and she kept her lips sealed of course. Some scenes were a little intense for me personally so I have to admit that this may be a trigger for some who have suffered some kind of domestic violence. I’m not trying to give away anything but it’s brought up in this book and think the warning is deserved.

Reads & Reels Blog Tour: White Water, Black Death by Shaun Ebelthite

I want to thank Reads & Reels Book Tours and the author for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review. I appreciate this opportunity and being one of the hosts for this blog tour.

Book Blurb:

Magazine editor Geneva Jones has been sent on a trans-Atlantic cruise to help secure a major advertising agreement from the CEO of the cruise line Rachel Atkinson, but her efforts to win her over are curtailed by a mysterious crew death. Geneva suspects foul play. Rachel insists its suicide. A former investigative journalist, Geneva can’t resist digging deeper, but what she finds is far more devastating. There’s an Ebola outbreak on the ship, everyone is trapped aboard and Rachel is trying to keep it secret.

Geneva knows enough about Ebola to be terrified, but she’s also onto the biggest story of her career. Rachel turns Geneva’s own colleagues against her when she tries to investigate, so she enlists the help of her son, Aaron Atkinson, whom Rachel adopted from Uganda seven years ago, when he was a teenager. Now an isolated and vaguely broken adult, he’s an easily manipulated source. At least that’s what Geneva thought. Off the coast of Bermuda, with the ship anchored in quarantine, Aaron makes a public announcement informing passengers of the outbreak.

Panic surges through the ship. People begin jumping overboard, ignoring a ship-wide lockdown. The ship’s security start to lose control, tasering passengers indiscriminately. A mayday is declared in front of the world’s media, but Bermuda refuses to open its maritime border. The ship limps toward Miami, with more than half of everyone aboard sick. Rachel shocks everyone by resigning after a public lounge is converted into an apocalyptic triage clinic. Geneva has lost her story, Ebola can’t be treated on-board and the nearest help is more than 3,000 miles away.

Review: Wow what a thrilling and fantastic book! I give this book 4 out of 5 thrilling stars! While reading this book I was on the edge of my seat and so anxious to figure out what was going to happen next! The reason I am not giving this book 5 stars is because I was a bit confused in the beginning and wasn’t sure what was going on at first. This probably could have just been me but overall this was a great read! This book was filled with twists and turns that I didn’t see coming! There is action in this book from beginning until end! I highly recommend this book!

I did a little bit of buddy reading with Adrienne @ Darque Dreamer Reads and we both agreed that we will never step foot on a cruise ship after reading this thrilling book!😰😰😰
