Author Interview Featuring Didi Oviatt

I am so glad that today I get to feature one of my all time favorite authors and friend, Didi Oviatt! Not only is she super talented, she is also kind, inspiring and has a free-spirit that you can’t help but to love!💖 From my beginning days as being a book blogger, Didi was one of the few people who made me instantly feel at home and after reading two of her books and reading her blog and magazine, I was in awe because of the way she had with words. I hope that when I finish my novel that I am able to become atleast half of the author Didi is!😀 So enough of my babbles. about my innoncent girl crush on Didi Let’s get to the Q&As with her and yours truly!💖🎊🎉

Didi with her latest novel, Search for Maylee

Will you please tell us a little bit about yourself?

My two terrorising, bugar-faced children hold the key to my heart. Writing suspense novels leaves me to feel empowered, grounded, and utterly beside myself all at once.

And…………….

My idea of a perfect evening is to be is standing around a booming campfire, with a cold beer in hand, and in a place where the stars are so bright and beautiful it feels like I can reach up and grab them! I’m a small town girl surrounded by mountain ranges that are to die for. So yes, I totally get to experience this phenomenon often!

Can you tell us about one or more of your novels?

I think I’ll to go with Aggravated Momentum to ramble about today. Mostly because you’re yet to read it, Dani *wink. wink.* This was my first ever Physcological Thriller. It was the first book I wrote that made me realize I have the kind of potential to actually pursue writing as a lifelong career. The premise is centered around a family with dark secrets, and a killer with a knack for psychological torture. The main victim doesn’t die right off, in this creepy little slasher… No, no, that would be too easy. Instead, the people she cares about are picked off around her, one by one, while her tormentor watches her dismay from a distance. I could go on, but I’d rather you find out for yourselves! 😉

Are there characters in your stories based off yourself or anyone else?

For the most part, no. However, I do have a short story collection that is based on myself, and some elaborated silly memories of my younger years. There are six stories total, and the series is titled Time Wasters.

What has been the hardest part of becoming/being a published author?

Time management!! Hands down, juggling life as a (excellent) mommy and (incomparable) wife (lol), working part time outside the home and writing full time inside the home. It’s hard not to get a little ran down in finding the time. I’ve definitely learned a thing or two over the last couple of years about prioritizing over stressing. Sometimes you have to take a breath and slow yourself down! Becoming a successful writer is huge, but that can never be accomplished without at least trying to keep your sanity intact.

When did you first start writing stories or any other kind of writings?

I’ve always dabbled some in poetry, and excelled in creative writing projects up through high school, but it wasn’t until I was in my mid-twenties and going through a bit of medical struggles, that I found my love to create literature. I had to stop drinking, and spent a lot of time on bed-rest… so, naturally I was bored! I decided that I needed a hobby that was constructive, and might help me to feel capable and competent again despite my body’s pitfalls. I turned to writing as an outlet, something to help pull me me away from self-pity and boost my overall health in general. Ultimately, writing turned into a passion much bigger than I’d ever dreamed it could! In a way, you could say writing changed my life.

If you wrote an autobiography, what would the title be?

Making Mind Over Matter a Reality

Did you take writing classes or are you self taught?

I’m completely self taught. Although, I like to think of the novels read as the best teaching tool available to writers. In my opinion, creativity can rarely be taught, and everyday choices in life itself can offer the biggest lessons. You just need to pay attention, open your mind, and allow yourself to learn.

What is the most difficult part of writing?

Edit. Edit. Edit.

What do you enjoy most about being a published author?

I love the feedback and the growth in it. I guess you could say the whole process of self-improvement is absolutely addicting!

What are your hobbies?

OMG where to start! I probably have too many hobbies, that’s why I’m always strapped for time, and utterly behind on my promised reads and writing projects! I’m very outdoorsy. If it involves fresh open air, the sun and the wilderness, then consider me in! I’m like the most opposite of a ‘city girl’ one can possibly get. Some might even go as far as to call me a redneck… and so be it! That said, I spend a lot of time getting dirty. I hike, ride ATV’s, hunt (my favorite is archery), lots and lots of fishing, swimming/boating. I also love Native American artifacts, so I spend a lot of time looking for arrowheads etc, mostly in desert ranges. I also LOVE to take the time teaching my kids dance, sports, and music!

Are there any authors that have inspired your love for writing?

Every single book I’ve ever read has inspired me in one way or another. I pick up on the qualities I love, and I take note of what I don’t. BUT, if I have to pick just one author then I’m going with Colleen Hoover. Not only because her writing is absolutely amazing, but because she’s a beautiful person in general. She’s a giver, an absolute inspiration in every way. She donates and raises money for charities often, and is a pillar of the community. I actually got to interview her for The Conscious Talk Magazine and it was absolutely a dream come true!

If you could give young writers (who’s dream is to be published) a piece of advice that has anything to do with the writing process, what would that be?

Take your time, and take breaks before you do any rounds of edits and revisions. Once you’ve stepped away from a project for a while, you’ll come back with a clean slate and a fresh perspective. Overall this will help your piece to be better rounded and prettier polished.

Here’s a bio on Didi with links and about her books! I got this bio from her author/book blog. You can connect with Didi on her blog @ https://didioviatt.wordpress.com/about/

Growing up in a small town had more than several advantages and disadvantages. Saying that my childhood was sheltered is nothing short of an understatement. Unlocked doors, cleared streets, and the quiet of a trustworthy neighborhood were all welcomed features of my hometown. As a small child I baked cookies with the old lady down the road. I sat next to my kindergarten crush in sun day school, and literally rode my bike in the middle of the road without a care in the world. We didn’t have what kids have today. We actually had to use our imaginations to have a good time. There were no smart phones, tablets, or 64s to keep us occupied. We were perfectly content to play with our stick guns and a water hose for hours on end… And I loved it! Along with my scrapes and bruises I also maintained a simple, happy for the little things attitude, and of course a great tan.

Now that I have made my childhood out to be nothing but cherries and smiles, I have to point out the disadvantages that came with the small town upbringing– before the world of electronics took over the young mind. One word distinctively comes to mind… Boredom! As I grew into adolescence I no longer cared much for silly toys, dancing, baking, or crafts. I rebelled like many young adults do. With a sever chip on my shoulder and a lack of coordination in the sports department, I spent the majority of my time partying. Nothing too outrageous, mostly close friends, fires, and beer.

As much as I would love to say that living in a small town gave me an overactive imagination and love for books, that is unfortunately not the case. I cared more about having a good time than I did about school. I was voted wild child twice in high school. I cheated my way to passing grades.

It wasn’t until I was settled and married with a child on the way that I found my love for the literary world. Rearing out of my mid twenties left me a bit more mature, having to find more important things to do with my time than re-occurring nights at the bar. This is when it started – I read one book after another for a few short years, then decided to give writing a bash. I’m completely amazed at the love I developed! Once I started putting the world of imagination that has long been trapped in my overactive mind into a keyboard, the transformation of self began. A new aspiration in life has formed. I want nothing more than to be known as the unexpected novelist who took the literary world by storm!

My novels include three stand alone thrillers, Search For Maylee, Aggravated Momentum, and The Stix. I’ve released the start to a YA dystopian trilogy New Age Lamians (books 2 and 3 are intended to be released in 2018). I also have a few short story anthologies, Time Wasters, and The Suspenseful Collectionpartnered with Kim Knight.

*Update About My Family~Sorry About The Wait*

I know that all my bloggy friends that have been following me or have seen me around are due for some kind of update regarding my life situation and what’s been going on. I am thrilled to say that I am able to eat again and that I have received my meds! Woot we also were able to get 2 sample pens of insulin from our doctor. Which is all amazing news! If you have no idea what I am talking about you can find it @ gofundme.com/needing-help-for-medical-and-rent-for-kids

Also some people have mentioned PayPal and I’m sorry I didn’t add a PayPal button but the email linked to my PayPal account is daniellepirok88@gmail.com and if you need anymore info about PayPal or for any other reason you can contact me through that e-mail as well. Sorry rambling again. Back to how things have been. Tries to zip mouth and concentrate so I don’t ramble on and drive everybody cuckoo!

It’s been a nightmare of a month and I am still embarrassed about the fact that I had to post a fundraiser in the first place. What I told you guys and filled you in, that was true and you guys are life savors with your shares, thoughts and incredible donations! I just didn’t tell you guys that it got to the point of us adults stopping eating so that we made sure the kids had enough. Ugh. We don’t regret this action one bit but now have to pay the consequences of our health taking a dive with our choices.

I saw my doctor last week and have extremely high liver and kidney function test results. My doctor isn’t sure what this means but I ask you guys to pray for me and my family while we get through this hard time. We got a short extension on our rent as well. So things may not be grand and were not out of the water yet but things are better and that’s all thanks to each and every one of you. Thank you for help feed my family. Thank you for helping me get on medicine so that I didn’t have to have seizures in front of my children and thank you for the gift of food to eat. I will never be able to thank you enough and just wanted to let you know what all of you had done is a miracle to me and I am crying like a baby and you are the most beautiful and AMAZING individuals I have ever had the pleasure to meet.

Oh and kind of off topic but I was so blessed to have been put on the top nominations list for this poll for overall best book blogger! So if you can check it out that would be awesome! I would appreciate some votes but if not there is some other great bloggers as well!😙💚😍 You can find the link to the Twitter Poll @ https://twitter.com/writethrunight/status/993136266861596672?s=19

*Update on Fundraiser! Thanks so much! Updated Link*

I want to thank everyone who has sharing my fundraiser. When it comes to putting yourself out there and asking for money in that manner, I have to admit there has been a lot of shame. Trust me I battled myself and kicked my ass for having to do this. I mean in the blogosphere, I love to be the jokey and overly affectionate Dani(which I still am) but things got to the absolute point where I had no choice but to do it.

By all means, do I want anyone to suffer because of me but having people’s thoughts, shares, and prayers/vibes has given me hope beyond measure. Because of the individuals whom have shared on Twitter and here I was able to get one of my medications for my seizures and a partial on my chemotherapy medication. Two amazing donors helped me out and had enough for some of my medication!❤❤❤ I wish I knew them personally so I could bear hug them so I could thank them in person. Their gift has given me hope and joy! This means the world to me and I am finally able to have my body heal to a certain extent and am forever beyond grateful.

Also, I have to thank my friend J.B. @ The Militant Negro for posting a post regarding me and for messaging right away and is sending me medical supplies. I know you said no thanks were needed, my friend but I couldn’t help it!😀❤ He is a wonderful and supportive blogger that deserves any and all the recognition.

All of you mean so much to me in the blogosphere my GoFundMe link on Twitter or wherever it would mean so much to me!❤ Also I accidentally changed the link because I am not webologically equipped. Yes I made up that word. The link to share is https://www.gofundme.com/needing-help-for-medical-and-rent-for-kids

I also tried to update my story and all that shenanigans! Thank you all for your support. You ROCK!❤❤❤

Coming Clean About My Absence…My Family Has Been Struggling And Is In Need.. Hardest Post To Post

I know many have wondered where in the hell I have been… Well yes I have battled grief and yes I have had issues going online but I haven’t shared it all.
I have went through way more than grief, I have been fighting for my ability to take care of my children and to get the medical treatment for my family. Long story short, we have lost most of our income and medical benefits.

We went weeks without electricity, had to cut back like barely nothing on food for kids to have it and we have went without medical supplies and medications.

I have been battling seizures without my medicine and haven’t been able to caretaker my son’s father who has a brain injury and can’t remember 20 mins ago or long term. My child’s mother has been battling renal failure with no way to go to the doctor and my other son’s father has no insulin. I know that’s a lo but we are four disabled people who work together to give our kids as much as love as possible.

I hate and I am scared about writing this post because it’s so hard for me to swallow my pride but we have tried every agency and every resource possible. Thanks to the one friend I asked advice from Kim @ By Hook or By Hook I was able to get an emergency food resource for the week but since we are facing eviction and are we need some medications to live we are asking for the bare minimum to help us out, enough for rent and meds. I know that many might be having their own struggles and please don’t feel bad if you can’t help and I don’t want anyone to go without because of me. Your kindness, prayers and/or vibes mean the world to me and are just as important!💜 You can find the link to the fundraiser @ https://www.gofundme.com/trying-to-pay-rent-amp-medical-needs

It’s a safe and secure place for any transactions and none of your information will be shared.

Manipulated Lives

Five stories – Five Lives

Have you ever felt confused or at a loss for words in front of a spouse, colleague or parent, to the extent that you have felt inadequate or, worse, a failure? Do you ever wonder why someone close to you seems to endure humiliation without resistance?  Manipulators are everywhere. At first these devious and calculating people can be hard to spot, because that is their way. They are often masters of disguise: witty, disarming, even charming in public – tricks to snare their prey – but then they revert to their true self of being controlling and angry in private. Their main aim: to dominate and use others to satisfy their needs, with a complete lack of compassion and empathy for their victim.   In this collection of short novellas, you meet people like you and me, intent on living happy lives, yet each of them, in one way or another, is caught up and damaged by a manipulative individual. First you meet Tess, whose past is haunted by a wrong decision, then young, successful and well balanced Sophie, who is drawn into the life of a little boy and his troubled father. Next, there is teenage Holly, who is intent on making a better life for herself, followed by a manipulator himself, trying to make sense of his irreversible incarceration. Lastly, there is Lisa, who has to face a parent’s biggest regret. All stories highlight to what extent abusive manipulation can distort lives and threaten our very feeling of self-worth.

I absolutely loved this book and how each of the five stories brought a unique group of characters and a steady paced plot to keep you hooked from start to finish. I’m going to be honest, I devoured this whole book in one night and stayed up all night with it! #WorthIt!

I really enjoyed the different backgrounds of each character and how it brought a fresh perspective to the table for every one of the five stories. I became heavily invested in the characters and I ended up scrolling through my kindle as fast as I could so that I could discover the twists and outcome. Out of all the stories, I really adored Tess and Tattoos. It was a bittersweet story but like the rest of the novellas, it really made you think of the effects that abuse has on someone and what they all go through.

As a woman who has been in a couple of emotionally abusive relationships, I really felt Tess’s pain but in the same sense I felt her joy!💖 Even though I faced abuse throughout my life, I thankfully didn’t find these psychological dramas a trigger. This beautiful collection of novellas are full of depth, heart-wrenching and heartwarming moments that I am sure many readers will love! I highly recommend these stories and am excited to see what the author comes out with next!

Book Review
When Chauncey Rogers first asked me to review his new book “Happily”, I was automatically intrigued after reading his horror/thriller novel, “Cleaving Souls”. Now when he told me it was a Cinderella retelling, I was completely thrown off guard! How was the man that wrote such a thrilling novel as “Cleaving Souls” going to pull off a fairy tale relling??!! Honestly, I was a little scared because what if I didn’t like it and I liked Chauncey as a person so much as well as his previous novel.
Well he put those feelings at bay, instantly!!!

In fact, I devoured this whole novel in one sitting! This is hands down the best fairy tale retelling that I have read! It was completely incredible and the characterization was absolutely amazing! Laure was filled with this sass and spunk that you can’t help but love. Luc has a heart of gold that just made me swoon.

The plot was fast and steady yet wonderfully descriptive! This book teaches a lot of valuable principles, for instance you should “never judge a book by it’s cover” and “true beauty truly lies from within”. I became intensely invested in these characters that I didn’t want the novel to stop and I am dying for more! I truly loved everything about it and Chauncey Rogers has quickly made himself one of my all time favorite authors! I know that regardless of the genre or the synopsis of the book that Chauncey Rogers comes out with, it’s going to be a magnificent work of art! I would seriously follow his work anywhere! I highly recommend this novel to anyone who loves a good retelling and/or Young Adult novel.😍💯📚❤👑

Chauncey Rogers was born in Arizona, and since then has hopped back and forth between the mid-western and western United States. He married in 2012 while attending school in Utah. Omg, this brought a new face to the horror genre! Yes it’s filled with guts and blood but the plot was AMAZING! I was hesitant to read this book at first. I mean look at that COVER!!!😱😱😱

Yes it scared the crapola out of me and had me awake through the night with nightmares but it also had me turning pages as fast as possible needing to know how things turned out! Rafael Chandler truly created a work of art when he wrote Mask Beneath Her Face. If you love a good slasher film and something so intense that has you on the edge of your seat, than look no further than this incredible book.

This is a fantastic story that is surely not to be missed and I am so thankful to Shannon @ Reads & Reels Blog Tours and Rafael Chandler for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review! I vow to finish every book that I receive because when a publishing company or an author sends me an advanced copy they are giving me a golden opportunity. I am given the opportunity to read a book that would have costs me a good bit of money for free and they could have given the opportunity to another blogger. I have never reviewed a book as a DNF and stand by my standards to do everything in my power to not have to do this again. I also wanted to let the readers know ahead of time that I did not get past the first 2 chapters so I can’t give you the best of knowledge of this story. I only did not finish because of triggers. The writing and word building was great but I could not get past the triggers. I feel I need to post my review not only to share my honest opinion but to give some a warning because the triggers for me caused panic. I also want to genuinely apologize to the publisher and author for not finishing this story. It had nothing to do with your writing or this book. My review is simply because of my own personal triggers.

SynopsisA powerful novel about a gutsy showgirl who tries to conquer her past amongst the glamour of 1960s Las Vegas–and finds unexpected fortune, friendship, and love.

It was unimaginable. When she was eight years old, Lily Decker somehow survived the auto accident that killed her parents and sister, but neither her emotionally distant aunt nor her all-too-attentive uncle could ease her grief. Dancing proves to be Lily’s only solace, and eventually, she receives a “scholarship” to a local dance academy–courtesy of a mysterious benefactor.

Grown and ready to leave home for good, Lily changes her name to Ruby Wilde and heads to Las Vegas to be a troupe dancer, but her sensual beauty and voluptuous figure land her work instead as a showgirl performing everywhere from Les Folies Bergere at the Tropicana to the Stardust’s Lido de Paris. Wearing costumes dripping with feathers and rhinestones, five-inch heels, and sky-high headdresses, Ruby may have all the looks of a Sin City success story, but she still must learn to navigate the world of men–and figure out what real love looks like.

With her uncanny knack for understanding the hidden lives of women, Elizabeth J. Church captures both the iconic extravagance of an era and the bravery of a young woman who dances through her sadness to find connection, freedom, and, most important, herself.

Book ReviewI am sorry but I had to DNF this book not because it was bad but because there were some really big triggers for me. Honestly, I can’t sleep tonight because the scenes keep running through my head. I usually can handle talk about these triggers but it went to a detail that caused me to hyperventilate. This is totally just a me thing. I know that many others love this book and it’s highly recommended. The triggers were just way too intense for me to sit through. There are triggers of an animal death and intense childhood abuse scenes. I’m sure this book was great and many others have enjoyed it, I just can’t finish it because of some recent trauma that I have experienced. I don’t know how to rate this story because I couldn’t get past the first chapters without a panic attack but it was well written and think many will enjoy so my lack of stars is not personally against the book it is because I don’t feel I can rate something properly that I didn’t read. I’m sorry that I haven’t been active today or last night. I just didn’t realize the possible effects that a book could have on you this extent. If you’re not triggered by these events than I would suggest you checking it out for yourself.

The Bradshaw brothers never dreamed they’d return to their hometown. But tragedy has brought them back together in Benevolence, Washington, where they’re finding generosity, surprising revelations—and unexpected love . . .

Sullivan Bradshaw is in way over his head. A car crash killed his brother, Matthias, and critically injured his sister-in-law. It’s Sullivan’s turn to care for the couple’s six children and the ancestral farm, but the die-hard bachelor and art professor is hardly family-man material. What he needs is the perfect nanny-miracle worker-saint. What he gets is pretty Rumer Truehart, a free spirit who will change everything he ever thought he wanted . . .

Rumer learned the hard way that nothing is for sure, much less forever. And she certainly understands why Sullivan’s unhappy childhood makes him a strictly no-commitments kind of guy. But she can’t help being drawn to this thoughtful, gentle man. And when trouble strikes, she’s determined to win his trust—and show him love can be a promise for keeps.

“A delicious small‑town treat.” ‑‑Library Journal

Holy, Moly! What a book!❤ When I first saw this novel in the Kensington catalog and requested, I thought I would be reading a sweet romance. I couldn’t imagine that this story would hit so close to home that it blew me away! This book is way more than what meets the eyes! I could relate to Rumer so much. She had so many trust issues and was scared of getting hurt because of her traumatic past and her run in with the foster system just made things that more relateable! She was so strong though and it really touched my heart. Heck yes for strong people who lived through the system and are awesome! The characterisation in this book was fantastic!

The 6 Bradshaw children all touched my heart in so many ways. Each of them troubled from a rough life before adoption and were battling the system. Now faced with having their father, Matthias Bradshaw dead from a car accident and their mother, Sunday Bradshaw, is in coma fighting for her life, they must push on again with the help of their Uncle Sullivan Bradshaw who has no idea what he’s doing. When thankfully, Rumer Truehart starts helping out at the Bradshaw house. Everything flowed so well in this story and was an incredible family drama that I would re-read! The realistic and raw emotions in this story touched my heart but also gave me a sense of hope.

The reason I love this story so much and how it is deeply embedded in my heart is because I could relate to everything that happened in this story. Reading the premise, I had no idea that this story would capture my heart and have me wishing the second installment was out already!

I don’t want to give any spoilers away but in my reviews I like to open myself up and share how I can relate and why a book effected me so. My life is not identical to the Bradshaws but I am going through situations that just relate in a powerful way. So, I’m going to share a little about me and how this book effected me. I went through group homes, residential treatment facilities and all the ugly sides of the system that are kept on the hush. As a child, I was in the system and had histories like Heavenly Bradshaw and Rumer Truehart. There characters are so relatable because they come off harsh and Heavenly like a punk kid when there is so much more to them. Once when I was staying in this couple’s house I spent 24 hours in a car trunk for not doing a foster mother’s dishes correctly. So it can be really rough in the system to say the least and it changes you. Going through the experiences that I did helped created the woman I am now and you can see in this novel that Rumer is so strong and scarred because of her life as a broken child. There were so many experiences that have your emotions on a whirlwind but all of them are worth it. Your heart will be touched in so many ways.  While reading this novel, I was rooting for Sunday Bradshaw to get better. She adopted 6 children that had been through difficult experiences and had such a great heart. I had so much respect for her and it hurt me to see this family shattered. This book was surely worth any tears!

The romance between Rumer and Sullivan was sweet and so relatable. Sullivan Bradshaw also had a very rough childhood that kept him from Benevolence but his return was awesome! He struggles with thoughts of his alcoholic father but he strives to be a better man. Reading about him growing to love the kids and Rumer and him growing from the experience of taking care of 6 kids they didn’t know.

I also could relate to this story because my son’s father was in a horrific accident 4 years and only given 6% chance to live and if he was to live they didn’t think he would be able to walk or talk again. It was horrible waiting for weeks not knowing if he would wake out of a coma then come out of a vegetated state but he did. The doctors thought it was a miracle he is able to function and do as much as he can. 4 years later, I am still his caretaker and will be forever and he never remembers what happens the previous day and sometimez just 5 minutes ago. He has long term and short term memory loss and even though that has effected my life tremendously he can do everything else pretty normal physically! So we were lucky but we suffer the effects daily with his brain; not being able to remember simple things, retain memories, schizophrenia, and tourette’s syndrome. We make it though and push through one day at a time.

In this story, I felt like I was living my life in a way that is hard to describe. The situation is not the same but I could relate on so many levels that this book truly felt like Home. I always try to tell everyone how I can relate to a story by opening up in a way so people can understand more about how I feel about a book. This book was fantastic in every sense. Home With You made me laugh, cry, and root for the family to succeed! It was truly a remarkable story! Shirlee McCoy gave amazing descriptions and a plot that had a steady pace that is sure to win your heart! This story leaves a lot for the next in the series and I can’t wait for the next installment!!!! When I read that this story was a spin off, I just couldn’t believe it! Most spin offs are confusing and just aren’t up to par like this story!

Thanks so much for reading my review! Followers have always loved when I shared and opened my heart when a story was relatable in some way so that’s why I decided to open up. I also wanted to let whomever is reading this know that this book is so much more than what meets the eyes. I’m so glad I got the chance to read this book and read it within a day! I highly recommend this heartfelt story.
